Don’t Be a Loser, Think Ahead

Posted on December 17, 2007 by DJ

In business there are winners, losers, and everyone in between. There’s much speculation on what separates the groups, from God-given abilities to work habits. I think that one of the major things that separates the winners from the losers is that losers wait for someone to tell them to go, while winners have already crossed the finish line.

What am I talking about? Well, it all comes down to planning in advanced. Don’t wait until the last minute to get yourself together because you’ll be left behind in the dust. A lot of blogs are writing about how to plan your time around the holiday season, as often times family takes priority over work during the last week of December. That’s great and it’s something that should be considered, but unlike most I think that aspect should have been planned out during the first week of the month at the latest.

For example, I write 5 blogs, and after this week I won’t write a thing for them until sometime in January because I’ve already written posts that cover the next two weeks. This was smart planning indeed as two unexpected events came up that will need my attention during that time, and if I would have left all that extra on my plate I’d be stressed out and very cranky.

The people that move ahead and build successful businesses are the people who take the time to consider not only what’s right in front of them, but also what will be in front of them once the current dust clears.

When December rolls around next year I hope you won’t be one of the ones who says, “Oh my, Christmas is coming. I need to boost my sales to take advantage of that.” Instead, be a winner who says “I’m glad I had my Christmas strategy done in September, now let me focus on what’s coming up in January and February.”

Don’t wait until January 1st to realize that you’ll be facing a work slump for the next few weeks as people get back on schedule and begin to open their wallets again. Think ahead and plan in advanced so while others are sitting and twiddling their thumbs, you’ll be jogging down the path to success.
