Absolutely Ridiculous Job Titles
Warning….rant ahead.
I just can’t hold it in any longer.
I am sick of all these stupid job titles.
Web 2.0 has brought a lot jobs, but with them has come the silliness.
Chief Innovation Experience Design Officer
Vice President of Interface Evangelism
Chief Evangelist
Chief Blogging Officer
What the heck?
Yes, when there’s a new job you have to create a title that fits, but some of these titles are taking it a little too far.
I’m all for creativity but there’s a hint of self importance that irks me. And sometimes it’s just plain silly.
What if you have to go back to work at a more traditional firm. What are you going to put on your resume? Good luck trying to network with some Corporate America Head Honcho when your job title sounds just as ridiculous as President of Donut Consumption.
What do you think about these web 2.0 job titles? Do you have one yourself?

I recently ran across a Digital Consultant.
December 21st, 2008 at 11:07 pmI think these titles indicate that we are at a new point in history. I find it nice to see that companies have embraced new media enough to really try to explain what it is the person is responsible for. In many circles, there is lots of resistance to new media and change overall, so it’s easy to understand why an “evangelist” or “innovation officer” would be needed. As far as getting a job in the future with those titles, I think it will be a snap as long as they can prove that their work did indeed fit those titles.
December 27th, 2008 at 6:19 pmYes, I also find it nice when new titles are made to fit new jobs however in my humble opinion titles like “Vice President of Interface Evangelism” do little but confuse people. I have no idea what a person like that is responsible for.
Also I may be biased in that evangelist is a religious term to me though I do realize it has more than one meaning.
